Longsword Training:
The Foundation of HEMA
The longsword is perhaps the most iconic weapon of the European Middle Ages and Renaissance. At MyTHS, we offer a deep dive into the techniques, history, and philosophy of this versatile weapon, which served as the primary tool for both judicial duels and battlefield combat.
Our Longsword Traditions
MyTHS focuses on two of the most influential and well-documented traditions in Western martial history:
The German Tradition (Johannes Liechtenauer & Meyer)
We study the 16th-century German tradition, specifically the work of Joachim Meyer. His famous 1575 treatise is a cornerstone of historical fencing, providing a comprehensive guide to the "Kunst des Fechtens" (Art of Fighting). This system is characterized by its sophisticated "Master Cuts" (Zornhau, Kliesh, and Oberhau) and a heavy emphasis on "Vor" (the initiative) and "Nach" (the response). It is a highly structured, expressive system designed for both the judicial duel and the competitive fencing schools of the Renaissance.
Why it appeals to modern practitioners: The German tradition is often the "gateway" to HEMA. It offers a clear, powerful system of mechanics and is highly applicable to modern athletic movement. For those who enjoy learning high-impact, decisive techniques and the rich geometry of the Renaissance fencing schools, the Joachim Meyer tradition is deeply rewarding.
The Italian Tradition (Fiore dei Liberi)
We also explore the 15th-century Italian tradition of Fiore dei Liberi. Fiore’s system is a comprehensive martial art that covers the longsword, dagger, wrestling, and polearms. It is known for its "Postures" (Poste) and "Measures"—focusing on the immediate transition from distance to close-quarters grappling and striking.
Why it appeals to modern practitioners: Fiore’s system is incredibly grounded and "visceral." It is highly attractive to those who want to understand the "complete" martial artist's perspective, where swordplay seamlessly blends into wrestling and joint locks. It offers a unique, holistic look at how a knight would have truly fought in the 1400s.
