Getting Started:

Your Journey into HEMA

Are you curious about the art of the sword? Do you find yourself drawn to the history of medieval combat or the elegance of Renaissance fencing? Welcome to MyTHS. Whether you are a history buff, a martial arts enthusiast, or a complete beginner, this guide will help you take your first step into the world of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA).

What is HEMA?

HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) is the study and practice of martial arts from the European continent between the 14th and 19th centuries. Unlike modern Olympic fencing—which evolved into a sport of speed and linear movement—HEMA seeks to reconstruct the actual techniques, mechanics, and philosophies found in historical manuscripts.

We study the "Kunst des Fechtens" (Art of Fighting) through the lens of primary sources, including:

  • Longsword: The iconic two-handed blade of the Middle Ages.

  • Rapier & Dagger: The sophisticated fencing of the Renaissance.

  • Saber: The versatile curved blades of the 17th and 18th centuries.

  • Sword & Buckler: The early foundations of European defense.

What We Do at MyTHS

At MyTHS, we bridge the gap between academic research and physical practice. Our goal is to provide a safe, community-focused environment where students can learn the "why" behind the "how."

Authentic Instruction

We don't guess. We train based on the actual teachings of masters like Johannes Liechtenauer, Fiore dei Liberi, and Joachim Meyer. We study the geometry of the blade, the leverage of the body, and the tactical nuances of the historical duel.

Community & Growth

We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) club dedicated to the preservation of this art. We host regular training sessions in Forest Hill and Bel Air, creating a welcoming space for people of all ages and fitness levels to train together.

Is HEMA Safe? (The Gear & Safety)

A common question for beginners is: "Is it dangerous?" The answer is no. We prioritize safety above all else.

Blunt Weapons: We never use sharp blades in training. Our training swords (feders, rapiers, etc.) are specifically designed for "full-contact" practice without injury.

Protective Gear: As you progress, students wear specialized fencing masks, heavy jackets, gloves, and "bellies" to ensure maximum protection during sparring.

Supervised Training: Every class is led by experienced instructors who ensure that techniques are performed safely and effectively.
